How It works

Prior to our meeting, I’ll ask you to fill in a questionnaire to help me learn more about you and your partner. This will give me great background information about you, individually as a couple. We will then organise a time to meet in person, get to know each other better and complete required paperwork.

During our first meeting, we can discuss how you would like your Ceremony to reflect your personality.  When it comes to your Vows, either you can write them, or alternatively, if you choose, I can write your vows for you. Is there anyone you would like to include in your ceremony?  Any rituals?

After getting to know you better as a couple, and we have done the formalities, I will then personalise a ceremony that reflects you, your tastes and circumstances. I will give you a script of the ceremony in advance of your day. I will happily make any requested changes and suggestions. You can have as much or as little control as you would like.

Formalities

I will help you with all the legal requirements and will complete all the necessary paperwork to perform your marriage. As determined by the Marriage Act 1961, in order for marriage to be solemnised in Australia there is a process of legal obligations. Here’s a rundown, so you know what to expect:

Both parties must willingly consent to marriage.

You must be at least 18 years of age in order to be legally married.*

If you are bringing a partner into Australia on a prospective spouse visa, I can provide the necessary information.

Evidence of your D.O.B., place of birth, and photo identification must be provided, which can be by way of driver’s licence/passport and birth certificate.**

Completion & Lodgement of the Notice of Intended Marriage (NOIM). A minimum of one calendar month is required for lodging the NOIM and must be lodged by your celebrant.

If either party has been previously married evidence must be provided of a Certificate of Divorce/Decree Absolute, and/or Death Certificate should the previous spouse be deceased.***

Prior to the wedding ceremony, both parties must sign the Declaration of No Legal Impediment to Marriage (DONLI) which will be provided and witnessed by your celebrant.

On the day of your wedding ceremony, two (2) witnesses, both aged over 18 years, are required to sign official documents. Both witnesses must be present for the entire ceremony and understand the legal words spoken through the ceremony.

After the ceremony all documents will be lodged to “Birth Deaths & Marriages” by your celebrant. Once registered, you can apply for your official Certificate of Marriage.

 * In the event that one party is below 18 there are legal stipulations provided by the Marriage Act 1961-Section 12 in which a court order/magistrate or judge’s ‘effective consent’ authorising the marriage as well as written parental consent.

** All certificates must be provided as original copies, photocopies and digital copies are not accepted.

*** All original documents will be securely handled and sighted by the Authorised Marriage Celebrant before being returned to both parties.
